How It Works
Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that signals muscles to contract, thereby reducing excessive contraction of the targeted muscle. For example, easing the depressor anguli oris, which pulls the mouth corners downward, lets the corners lift more naturally; relaxing the levator labii superioris, which raises the upper lip too much, reduces gum exposure when you smile. Overdeveloped muscles such as the temporalis gradually decrease in bulk as their activity falls.
