What Is PicoPlus Tattoo Removal?
PicoPlus is a picosecond/nanosecond dual-pulse Nd:YAG laser developed by Lutronic. It delivers powerful energy in picoseconds (as short as 450 ps) to shatter tattoo pigment into fine particles. Because its pulse is shorter than that of nanosecond lasers, it breaks pigment down more finely while reducing heat damage to surrounding healthy tissue, helping to fade tattoos step by step while lowering the risk of scarring and pigmentation.
How It Works
For tattoo removal, PicoPlus primarily uses two wavelengths, 1064 nm and 532 nm. The 1064 nm wavelength responds mainly to dark, deep pigments such as black and navy, while the 532 nm wavelength targets brighter, more superficial pigments such as red and orange. When the picosecond pulse is absorbed by the pigment, a photoacoustic effect—rapid expansion that generates acoustic waves—occurs alongside a photothermal effect, breaking the ink into particles small enough for immune cells to clear. The fragmented pigment is then gradually eliminated through the body's metabolic process over the following weeks.
