What is PicoPlus Fractional?
PicoPlus Fractional is a treatment that combines Lutronic's picosecond laser device, PicoPlus, with a dedicated fractional handpiece. PicoPlus is an FDA-cleared picosecond laser (pulses on the order of a trillionth of a second) that offers four wavelengths — 1064nm and 532nm at its core, plus 595nm and 660nm. With the fractional handpiece, the laser beam is split into fine dot-like points delivered into the skin to target enlarged pores, scars, and rough texture. Although the name includes 'Fraxel,' here it refers to the fractional mode of a picosecond laser and is a different device from Solta's Fraxel.
How It Works
The fractional handpiece uses a diffractive optical element (DOE) or micro-lens array (MLA) to divide the laser energy into many tiny points delivered into the skin. While minimizing damage to the epidermis, it creates momentary micro-vacuole reactions in the dermis — laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB). As the skin heals these micro regeneration points, new collagen and elastic fibers form, so enlarged pores and depressed scars fill in and the texture becomes smoother. The ultra-short picosecond pulse reduces heat, so the burden of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is comparatively low.
